Casino Night Benefiting Steve's Camp at Horizon Farms
The night was filled with some of the most influential and inspiring people. Steve Kessner, founder and father of “Steve’s Camp”, simply explained where his passion for this dream came from. Personally experiencing someone help him greatly in life, by exposing him to a new world and environment, gave him the insight to push himself until he succeeded, then he did the same.
As a young boy growing up on the streets of the bronx, he had the opportunity to expand his horizons by attending Dartmouth College. The fresh air and change of scene, showed him how much life had to offer and that is where he found his true self and passion as a, now successful, real estate developer.
At Steve’s Camp, launched in 2010, it gives underprivileged youth (facing gangs, poverty, etc.) the ultimate summer camp experience! The kids live and interact in an atmosphere of teamwork and support. They write journals, participate in dialogue groups, feed sheep and clear trails, navigate the ropes course, exercise, play games, cook and build confidence and interpersonal skills.
Speaking to Joshua Borkin, Executive Director, Janice Starr and Jennifer Alpert, also made our experience covering the night pleasurable. We caught NBA legends, from the NY Knicks, John Starks and Herb Williams, too! Everyone made us feel welcomed and a part of the camp’s big happy family.
One truly memorable mention, was interviewing a previous camper turned camp counselor, named Victoria. She is a native New Yorker, from Brooklyn, who was so grateful for the opportunity to attend the camp, for the past six years. She explained how the difference in the environment changed her whole perspective of life. She loves the fresh air, farm to table cooking approach and natural, clean, camp.
The moral of this story is that by opening yourself up to new ideas, it can help you live your best life! Hard work pays off and nothing in life worth living comes easy, so do not give up! There are people out there who practice the love of life and sharing it with others.
